Telefonica Deutschland Plans to Rely on Huawei and Nokia to Build a 5G Network

Telefonica Germany announced on December 11th that Nokia and Huawei have been selected to build a 5G network in order to start the deployment of the 5G network as soon as possible. Telefonica said it needs to obtain the necessary security certification before partnering with Nokia and Huawei, and once the partnership is confirmed, it will start building a network in early 2020.

Telefonica Germany said in a statement that "Telefonica Deutschland plans to rely on proven strategic partners Nokia and Huawei on its 5G access network", adding that suppliers will have to comply with security requirements, which are still subject to security certification by German regulators.

Earlier, the German government expressed its decision to allow Huawei to enter its market, saying it would not exclude Huawei from the construction of a 5G network.

Telefonica Germany, which operates under the German O2 brand, plans to launch an ultra-high-speed network in 2020.
By the end of 2021, it will cover Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne and Frankfurt. In the next phase, 5G infrastructure will be built in 30 German cities by the end of 2022, with a total population of 16 million.
